Straw Songs Vol. 3: Home (And Other Intimacies)

Lead me straight to water, And I’ll love you all my life. Be my warmth and shelter, And you’ll be a happy wife. You’ll be there to keep me strong When my bones are feeling weak. And you can share the secrets that I keep. Now that we’re not strangers, I think we’re a perfect pair. So, I will shield you from all danger By standing taller than a bear. If the forest swallows up the sun And darkness claims your day, I’m the friendly fireflies who will kindly light your way. You are my love-light. My rising sun. True hope surrounds you. I will never need another one. Hand-in-hand we walk through landscapes Strange and overgrown. Loving all the creatures Who are on and off the road. But if your head should start to swell And you feel you need relief, I’ll be there to lull your soul to sleep. And you can share the secrets that I keep.

Spend all my luck on good family and friends. Spend all my time hoping that this won’t end. I try my best, though I mostly just lose. But I have more than most rich men can prove. I’m done with the heartache. I’m done with the pain. From now on it’s only passion and flame. When I’m feeling lonely, It’s only ‘cause I’m alone. A couch and a TV Are not what one calls home. Spend all my luck on good family and friends. Spend all my time hoping that this won’t end. I try my best, though I mostly just lose. But I have more than most rich men can prove. I’ll always have my dreams And what they mean to me. But people disappear As seasons turn into years. And since I’ll come and go, I don’t want to feel that this wasn’t home. And so I’ll give up more In hopes I’ll find the love I implore. Refreshed and enlightened. Collected and cooled. Of course that’s ’til only I play the next fool. And when I am stricken, I’ll trade guile for tact. ‘Cause I am who I am and I am damn proud of that. Spend all my luck on good family and friends. Spend all my time hoping that this won’t end. I try my best, though I mostly just lose. But I have more than most rich men can prove.

You say I’m loud. You say I’m crass. I sleep on the couch Because I’m a smart-ass. But you come when I call, ‘Cause you know when I need Just simple love and some good company. I’m mostly wrong, But, by chance, if I’m right. Please don’t be offended If I brag for a fortnight. I may treat you wrong, That I must admit. But home’s where you’re still loved After being a prick. You and me can love and dream And we’ll chance all we see. ‘Cause when you’re near The world is clearer than love’s eternal spring… In spring… We have our love: An endless provision. You say I’m lazy, But I say efficient. And we will disagree, That we must confess. But home’s where we’re always Trying our best. Home’s where I’m always Trying my best.

I will sing you a song whenever you’re sad. Unburden your soul with a simple laugh. I never found it easy to sing ’til I sang for you. So, lend me your ears, but give me your heart. We’ll row down the creek and get a brand new start. I never found it easy to live until I lived for you. Where do you go to, my lovely, When a solstice of darkness inhabits your mind? If your heart lacks its passion and courage, Fret no more, my lovely - I’ll give you mine. You hold my whole world in the palm of your hand. We won’t say a word, yet we’ll both understand. I never found it easy to love until I loved you. I never found it easy to love until I loved you.
